The return of the group: unity and adaptation in animal societies
Save as calendar entryAbstract: Animal societies offer a window into the major transitions in evolution and the processes involved in the evolution of cooperation. However, there is much disagreement among theorists about how societies transition from assemblages of individuals to new evolutionary agents in their own right. In this talk I will review recent theoretical work on groups as fitness maximising agents and discuss how these models compare with empirical findings from our long-term study of banded mongooses in Uganda. The disparity between the assumptions of current theory and observed behaviour suggests that research on animal societies can continue to play a crucial role in the theory of evolution.
