Infection Biology Unit hosts rotation students

Rotation students at the Infection Biology Unit: Lennart Schlaphoff, Wiebke Maurer, Carina Fischer, Ekaterina Chukhno

Lennart Schlaphoff (“Molecular Medicine” program) screens samples from the DPZ collection for so far unrecognized primate-associated viruses with a particular focus on viral families that harbor human-pathogenic and zoonotic members. Carina Fischer (“Molecular Medicine” program) assesses the dependency of the Ebola virus glycoprotein (EBOV-GP) on cellular cysteine protease activity for host cell entry and investigates EBOV-GP’s potential to adapt to other host proteases. Wiebke Maurer (“Molecular Biology” program) analyzes the ability of the Ebola virus glycoprotein to evolve during host species switches focusing on humans, non-human primates and fruit bats as hosts. Ekaterina Chukhno („Molecular Biology“ program) is cloning subgenomic fragments of primate herpesviruses into cosmids in order to establish experimental systems for the characterization of these viruses. The students are supervised by Dr. Markus Hoffmann and PD Dr. Michael Winkler.
