The new microscope allows researchers to visualize infectious processes on the single cell level and in real time. For instance, the microscope enables the DPZ researchers to determine where in the cell viral glycoproteins are activated by host cell proteases and which cellular processes are hijacked by viruses for uptake into the cell. Moreover, the microscope can be used for high content imaging required for screening of bioactive substances and for high resolution microscopy.
