PhD student (m/f/d) bioinformatics

The Deutsches Primatenzentrum GmbH – Leibniz-Institut für Primatenforschung in Göttingen is a primate research and competence center that does basic research. It concentrates on three main areas named Organismic Primate Biology, Infections Research and Neurosciences. The DPZ maintains four field stations to do research on and with primates. Furthermore it is one of 95 research and infrastructure establishments of the Leibniz Association

We are seeking a highly motivated

PhD student (m/f/d) bioinformatics

for a research project in the Primate Genetics Laboratory. Funding of the PhD position is ensured for up to 4 years which is the maximum time frame for a PhD according to the local PhD program regulations.

We are analyzing many different non-human primate (NHP) genomes and use these genomics data in phylogeny and dating, demographics and hybridization, but also in functional analyzes and transcriptomics. An important part of the PhD project will be the bioinformatic analysis within our comprehensive study of newly generated NHP genome sequences ('1000 NHP Genomes'), which will cover studies of phylogeny, demographics, population genomics, species hybridization, and identification of traces of adaptation by positive selection. Furthermore, these data will be used to study the genomic organization of highly complex immunogenetic regions such as MHC or KIR. In addition, we are analyzing the coding and non-coding transcriptome of human and NHP natural killer cells with respect to development and function of these lymphocytes.

We are looking for a highly determined and enthusiastic doctoral student with a master’s degree in biology, computer science or bioinformatics, who is highly motivated in the functionality and application of various command line tools to analyze genomes and transcriptomes. We expect experience in different computer languages such as Python or R, as well as in several tools typically used in Genomics and Transcriptomics such as SAMtools, BEDtools, GATK.

We offer an international team of highly motivated and supportive researchers. The PhD student will apply for membership of the Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS) program "Biodiversity and Ecology" (http://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/138545.html) at the University of Göttingen.

The appointment at the DPZ follows the applied regulations of civil service. The classification follows the TV-L. Disabled applicants with equal qualification will be given preferential consideration. We kindly ask you to indicate in your application if you are disabled.

Please send in your written application including all certificates until August 31th 2019 under key word “PhD Bioinformatics” to Deutsches Primatenzentrum GmbH – Leibniz Institut für Primatenforschung – Personnel Office – Kellnerweg 4 – 37077 Göttingen or via mail to bewerbung(at)dpz.eu.
