The winners of the DPZ Photo Prize 2018 have been announced!

A total of 137 images were submitted for the DPZ Photo Prize in 2018 and for the first time the awards were presented in three categories: aesthetics, originality and science. The 20 best photos in each category were selected by a jury consisting of members of the DPZ Sponsorship Society and exhibited in the entrance hall of the DPZ. The DPZ employees and guests were then given the opportunity to choose their favorites: four weeks long they could vote for their favorites and the winners were announced at the Christmas party at the end of December.

In the category aesthetics, the picture entitled „Eingefangen/ Capture“  took first place (104 out of 359 votes). The photographer is Fabian Nummert, a master student in the Cognitive Ethology Laboratory. His winning photo was taken during a two-week stay in the Rocamadour monkey forest in France. During his short visit, the Barbary macaques allowed Fabian Nummert the opportunity to take a close-up.

In the category originality a Barbary macaques once again won the category. With the title „Entspannung am Wegesrand/ Relaxing by the wayside“ it received 65 of the 361votes. The photographer Charis Drummer is a veterinarian in the research platform Degenerative Diseases.

With 112 out of 361 votes, the photo „Einigkeit macht stark/ Unity is strength“  of Lauriane Faraut, a PhD student in the Cognitive Ethology Laboratory won the science category. It shows a group of gelada bachelors who have formed an alliance.

In addition to the three main prizes, the special award was given to Debbra Yasemin Knorr, a former student of the research platform Degenerative Diseases:
"The Big Bang" shows an all-rounder-cell specializing into a cardiac cell. The process was visualized by immunofluorescence staining of the structural proteins cTNT and a-actinin.
