Hot off the press: Research Highlights

The Popa langur looks awake and alert from our cover page. The little monkey belongs to a species that was only identified in 2020 by a team of researchers that included Christian Roos from DPZ. Unfortunately, the outlook for the animals is not good. Only 250 specimens still exist in Myanmar, threatened with extinction by poaching and forest clearing. Read the story of their discovery starting on page 27 in this issue.

Corona viruses were not unknown to the scientists in the Infection Biology Unit. With the onset of the pandemic last year, they took a close look at SARS-CoV 2 and within a very short time were able to clarify two crucial mechanisms that enable the virus to enter the host cell. This is important because these processes are key switch points for fighting the virus. You can read more about this in a detailed article on pages 15 to 21 in the new brochure.

Furthermore, you can find out what a "reach cage" is and what findings are being gathered with it in brain research, how an artificial network model can mimic a brain, and why blood is usually thicker than water even in Assamese macaques.
