Fieldstation

Madagascar - Kirindy field station

The Department of Behavioral Ecology & Sociobiology of the German Primate Center (DPZ) has been operating a field station in Madagascar since 1993. It is located in the area of the CNFEREF forest concession in the Forêt de Kirindy. This forest is home to eight lemur species, on which our research activities are focused. Our studies deal with various aspects of lemur behavior and ecology.

Information for interested external users and students

The DPZ field station is in principle available for external users, although DPZ staff and associated students of the University of Göttingen have priority in the allocation of limited workstations. Interested potential station users should communicate their plans at least six months in advance. If capacities are available, the station is also open to external researchers for a fee. Workstations for station users from outside the DPZ are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, whereby we are particularly interested in work on invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles and birds or botanical topics.

The Kirindy field station is located near the west coast, approximately 60 km northeast of Morondava. (Google Maps). The station offers accommodation for about ten researchers. Long-term Malagasy employees support our research activities on site.

Affenwald

Part of our research is carried out with two species of lemur in the Straußberg Affenwald.
