Infection studies in non-human primates
The Platform Infection Models offers the planning and conduct of virological infection studies in non-human primates (NHP). In addition to animal experimental work, we also perform virological and immunological analyses of the obtained samples as well as sample preservation for subsequent investigations. Our animal units and laboratories enable work with infectious and genetically modified pathogens of biosafety levels 1-3 in accordance with the regulations of the Biochemical Safety Regulation, the Animal Disease Pathogen Regulation, and the Genetic Engineering Act. Particularly for the study of human-pathogenic agents that can cause severe infections in humans, the S3 animal facility, in combination with the S3 cell culture laboratory, plays an important role in understanding the pathogen more quickly and developing effective measures for therapy and prevention.
NHP models
Our established NHP models in rhesus and cynomolgus macaques include, for example:
- Immunization studies
- Testing of antiviral substances in the context of a challenge infection
- Infection model for SARS-CoV-2 research
- Simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) model for HIV reserarch
- Infection model for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) research
- Infection model for influenza virus research
