Long-term field studies may reveal unnoticed details of social complexity: Determinants, mechanisms and functional significance of kin selection in mandrills
Save as calendar entryAbstract:
In primate societies, maternal kinship significantly influences the formation, structure and stability of social relationships primarily because females are generally the philopatric sex and there are obligatory and long-term bonds between mothers and their offspring. However, in several matrilineal societies, reproduction is often biased in favor of one or a few males. As a result, many individuals are related via the paternal line, but these individuals are generally not familiar with each other because they are born into different maternal families. As predicted by the kin selection theory, however, paternal relatedness should impact social relationships to promote paternal nepotism. For historical reasons, paternal relatedness as a structuring factor of social relationships has been little studied. In this talk, I will show that paternal relatives do exhibit differentiated relationships in mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) compared to unrelated individuals. I will then discuss and present new results on recognition mechanisms involved in paternal discrimination. Finally, I will give some indications on the consequences of differentiated social relationships on the selective value of individuals.
