Guinea baboons are one of six baboon species native to Africa. They live in Senegal in West Africa and are being studied at the DPZ field station there for a variety of issues. One of the most recent studies looked at which individuals in a baboon group influence collective decisions such as group departures. Is it more likely to be the males, or can females also initiate group movements? If both sexes are involved, how successful are they at leading the group? Read what the scientists found out on page 3.

At the turn of the year, one positive news followed the next. We were able to acquire four different third-party funding projects. The Collaborative Research Center "Cognition of Interaction" led by Alexander Gail was approved, Rüdiger Behr and Tobias Moser were successful with their application for the development of a gene therapy at the Leibniz Association, and the young researchers Michael Heide and Raymundo Báez-Mendoza both received an ERC grant. You can read about what the scientists plan to research at the DPZ in the future starting on page 14.

Once again this year, we received fantastic photos from our staff for the photo contest award offered by the DPZ Sponsorship Society. The ten best photos in the categories of aesthetics, originality and science were displayed in the foyer for three months and shown on the intranet. DPZ employees voted on their favorite motifs. You can admire the three winning images starting on page 30 in the current issue.

We wish you a pleasant reading!
