Research

Dietmar Zinner’s research focuses on primate evolution, ecology, and behaviour. Much of his work is based on data collection in the field, especially in African countries, e.g., Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Africa, Tanzania, Senegal, and Madagascar. He worked on topics such as group coordination, and group leadership in primates, the influence of venereal disease on the mating behaviour of free-living baboons and the evolution of primate social systems. Currently, he is working on the evolutionary history of baboons, the impact of hybridisation on the genetic diversity of primates, and the impact of climate chance on baboon distribution.

Short Profile

Dietmar Zinner is a senior scientist in the Cognitive Ethology Lab at the German Primate Center and lecturer at the Georg-August-University Göttingen. Since 2022, he is also an adjunct professor at the Jimma University in Ethiopia.

He studied biology at the Georg-August University of Göttingen and did his doctorate there at the Zoological Institute. After post-doctoral stays at the Center for Tropical Ecology and Duke University, USA, and in the Department of Behavioural Research and Ecology at the German Primate Center, he has been working in the Cognitive Ethology Laboratory and teaching at the Georg-August University of Göttingen since 2004.

In 1993, he received the Best Thesis Award of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Georg-August-University, Göttingen and the Young Scientists Award of the German Primate Center. In 2015, was awarded the Prix CSRS-Fonds Eremitage Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques en Côte d’Ivoire.
