Tanvir Ahmed
Research
PhD Project (2023-present):
Population Genetics, hybridization and Climate Change Vulnerability of Threatened Langurs in Bangladesh.
Short Profile
Tanvir Ahmed is a passionate primatologist from Bangladesh and a PhD student at the Primate Genetics Laboratory of the German Primate Center- Leibniz Institute for Primate Research, Germany under a prestigious doctoral scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). He is affiliated with the faculty of Biology and Psychology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany. His PhD research focuses on the population genetics, hybridization and climate change vulnerability of threatened langurs in Bangladesh.
Since 2015, Tanvir has been studying the behavior, ecology, systematics, and conservation science of threatened non-human primates in Bangladesh. His recent research on the mixed-species group formation and hybridization between Endangered Phayre’s langurs (Trachypithecus phayrei) and capped langurs (T. pileatus) are remarkable.
In 2020, Tanvir with 28 scientists described a new species of primate named Popa Langur (T. popa) from Myanmar. He has published 28 peer-reviewed articles, two book chapters, and many technical reports collaborating with over 200 scientists in about 60 countries.
Tanvir serves as a member of the IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group, and the editorial assistant of the Asian Primates Journal.
