Research highlights to read

In the new issue “Highlights of our research 2024”, we present the six most exciting results of DPZ scientists from the past year.

It's a real beauty, the monkey on our cover. Due to its magnificent fur coloration, it is also known as the “king of the monkeys”. Unfortunately, this primate species is threatened with extinction like so many others that belong to the group of slender monkeys and are found in South East Asia. Various langur species also belong to this primate group. In our brochure, you can read about how the animals are being increasingly squeezed together due to habitat loss. Researchers at the DPZ have even been able to demonstrate the hybridization of two different langur species. You can read about what this could mean for the survival of the species from page 32 onwards.

It is now well known that not only the age of the mother but also that of the father can influence the health of the offspring. Studies have shown that children of older fathers are more likely to have malformations and neurological developmental disorders. It is still largely unclear which processes take place here in detail. Researchers at the DPZ have examined and compared sperm DNA from common marmosets and humans. The focus was on special changes, so-called epigenetic modifications, in the DNA. You can read about the scientists' findings from page 12 onwards.

You can also find out why adult chimpanzees still like to play with each other, how Pirola differs from other SARS-CoV-2 variants and how our brain processes the position of moving objects.

We hope you enjoy reading it!

The brochure is available in printed form and can be viewed and downloaded online on our website. "Highlights of our Research" is published once a year and can be ordered free of charge. Please send us an e-mail with your postal address to presse(at)dpz.eu.
