Research on and with primates requires special research infrastructures. Work with pathogens that are also dangerous to humans may only be carried out under safety level 3 (S3) conditions. The non-invasive method of magnetic resonance imaging allows the investigation of scientific questions on living animals without harming the organism. Biodiversity, ecology and behavior of primates can only be studied in their natural habitats at field stations in the countries of origin.
