Expertise

Our hormone laboratory has experience in measuring steroid hormones using enzyme-immunoassay techniques since more than 25 years. To date, data generated in our lab have been used in more than 200 scientific publications.

Our specific expertise

  • Availability of validated assays for the analysis of female and male sex hormones (estrogens, progestogens, androgens) as well as stress hormones (glucocorticoids) in blood and saliva and their metabolites in urine and feces from a large number of primate species of all major taxa
  • Availability of validated assays for monitoring of reproductive status in female elephants and rhinos
  • Availability of validated assays for monitoring of stress physiology in elephants, rhinos and meerkats
  • Measurement of C-peptide (product of insulin biosynthesis and physiological marker of energetic condition) in blood and urine of macaques and great apes
  • Measurement of neopterin (marker for the activation of the cellular immune system) in blood and urine of macaques and great apes
  • Training of students and scientists from various European and overseas countries in non-invasive assay methodologies
  • Support of a large number of research projects through providing hormonal data
  • Collaborator in more than 200 scientific publications containing hormone results generated in our lab
  • Provider of a non-invasive reproductive monitoring service for the captive European Asian and African elephant populations since more than 25 years
