"I want to assemble cardiovascular research at the DPZ and establish models for heart failure in primates"
Prof. Dr. Rabea Hinkel
The Laboratory Animal Science Unit under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. med. vet. Rabea Hinkel was founded on 01.07.2018. It is a joint professorship of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover and the German Primate Center. The department sees itself as an interface between the needs of experimental animals and the implementation of experimental methods as well as translational biomedical research. The related aspects such as
animal welfare
standardized and optimal housing of the animals
authorization procedures of animal experiments
medical care of the breeding and experimental animal groups
veterinary support of internal and external experimental groups during experimental execution
establishment of new models in biomedical research
are implemented, continuously updated and newly establishes in close cooperation with those responsible for animal husbandry and animal welfare in compliance with legal requirements. Prof. Dr. Rabea Hinkel is a specialized veterinarian and can refer to her many years of experimental science with animals. This enables her, in addition to her own research focus, to grasp, critical question and coordinate the above mentioned aspects. From the beginning of 2019, the new central operation room will be available as well as a team of veterinarians, that will conduct the anesthesia for any departments of the DPZ as well as any external experimenters.
