Fifth anniversary of the „Basel Declaration Society“
The "Basel Declaration Society" is a federation of natural scientists as well as biological and biomedical research institutes founded on October 5, 2011 (in Basel?). Members of the Management Board also include the DPZ Director Stefan Treue and the Head of the DPZ Neurobiology Laboratory Hansjörg Scherberger. The current president is Rolf Zeller, Professor of Biomedicine at the University of Basel.
The aim of the association is to strengthen the acceptance of the "Basel Declaration" within and outside of the research community and to contribute to greater transparency in the communication on animal experiments. The Basel Declaration was adopted by more than 60 scientists from Switzerland, Germany, England, France and Sweden with the aim of strengthening the trust and of informing on the sensitive subject of animal research. In addition, the signatories commit themselves to more responsibility in dealing with animals in research and promote an unprejudiced dialogue with the public.
The initial signatories of the Declaration in November 2010 were Michael Hengartner, Rector of the University of Zurich, Dieter Imboden, former President of the National Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation, and Stefan Treue, Director of the German Primate Center. So far, 3.566 researchers and institutions have signed the Declaration.
