The "Göttinger Freilandtage" is a conference that scientists of the Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology Unit of the DPZ organize every two years. During the meeting scientists presented and discussed new results on the evolution of social behavior in mammals. A key aspect of the conference, which took place from 6th to 9th December 2011 in Göttingen, was the question, which factors cause flexible or inflexible social behavior in animals.

The results are now summarized in the up-coming special issue.
