Positive evaluation for the German Primate Center in Göttingen
The German Primate Center (DPZ) in Göttingen is an internationally accomplished institution that fulfils its tasks with a high level of success. Such were the comments of the Leibniz Association Senate in the resume on achievements by the DPZ.
Due to its national significance, the German Federal and State Governments fund the DPZ (and all other Leibniz Institutes). At least every seven years, the sponsors of these institutions inspect them to assure that they meet the quality criteria of a Leibniz Institute. The basis for the inspection is an independent evaluation by the Senate of the Leibniz Association. Independent and internationally recognized experts who are not employed at a Leibniz Institute are responsible for the evaluation of the institutes. The basis for the is written documents as well as a visit to the institute by an assessment group.
Strategic and well-considered development
The DPZ was awarded a positive testimonial on its research profile that was convincingly and successfully implemented in the three pillars: Infection Research, Neurosciences and Organismic Primate Biology. From primate husbandry and breeding to research with and about primates, it fulfils its core tasks with outstanding quality. The achievements of the DPZ in research and scientific services were predominantly evaluated as "very good" to "excellent". An important contribution is the significance of species protection and animal welfare in connection with research at the field stations in the tropics.
"We are very pleased with the positive results of the evaluation", says Stefan Treue, director of the DPZ. "Our plans to implement two new departments on Aging and Functional Imaging were praised", Treue added.
"We were encouraged to continue with our current strategy and are happy to implement the recommendations of the reviewers," says Michael Lankeit, administrative manager of the DPZ.
Unique primate husbandry
The primate husbandry and breeding as a central service facility for research both nationally and internationally, was evaluated as a unique service. The DPZ is fully prepared to meet the increased demands of animal welfare.
Excellent leadership
According to the statement issued by the Senate, "The scientific and administrative leadership of the institute is outstanding".
