The state of Lower Saxony is supporting the establishment of the COVID-19 Research Network Lower Saxony (COFONI) with 8.4 million euros, in which the competencies for corona research are to be bundled and strategies for dealing with the pandemic are to be developed. The University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) coordinates the network, which includes the German Primate Center and the University in Göttingen, the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig and the MHH Hospital as well as the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover.

The funds, which will be available until 2022, will be used not only to establish a technology platform but also for various research projects, which are divided into four key areas. The German Primate Center will contribute to the joint project by establishing non-human primate models and new methods for the treatment of COVID-19 as well as providing the infrastructure on site.
