The new DPZ aktuell is here

"You have grown!" Young people often hear this statement. Growth spurts during puberty are a normal developmental stage in humans. Until now, it was assumed that humans are unique in this respect. Researchers at the DPZ and the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna have now investigated this common hypothesis in our closest relatives, the bonobos. You can read what they found out from page 3 onwards.

Baboons were worshipped as deities in Ancient Egypt and were also mummified as sacrificial offerings after their death. However, these primates did not exist in the wild in Egypt at that time. An international and interdisciplinary research team has used genetic analyses of a baboon mummy that is over 2,000 years old to investigate how baboons came to Ancient Egypt. You can find out what exciting discoveries they made from page 10 onwards.

First you study biology, then you do your PhD and work as a postdoc for a few years. This is followed by junior research group leadership, habilitation and finally a professorship. For some scientists, the career path is crystal clear. But not everyone follows this straightforward path. At the first Science Career Day, DPZ employees learned how you can take very different directions from science and also be professionally successful outside the professorship. Five former DPZ employees reported on where they had ended up after their PhD thesis. You can read their stories from page 18 onwards.

In the new issue, we also report on the positive evaluations of the Primate Genetics and Neurobiology Laboratories, present our Scrollytelling about 40 years of research in the Peruvian rainforest and show how we are using simple methods to reduce our water consumption in the animal house in terms of sustainability.

We wish you an inspiring read!

"DPZ aktuell" is published four times a year, has about 35 to 40 pages each and can be subscribed to free of charge. Of course, the magazine is also available in the building: You will find it at the reception desk or in the library.
